Attorneys come in all shapes and forms. There are attorneys that dedicate their practices from everything from liability cases to criminal defense and everything in between. Attorneys use different labels to identify themselves as well. Some refer to themselves as just plain old lawyers some refer to themselves as attorneys, there are esquires which has a classy ring to it. All do the same type of job just for different niches. Every attorney can review legal forms, file legal forms, review simple agreements like landlord tenant agreements, they can all review simple real estate forms. It is when things get complex that you have to turn to a specialist.
Like medicine, attorneys have specialty practices. Their specialty maybe criminal defense, so that they have studied the laws specifically dedicated to criminal defense. If the specialty is real estate than they would have specifically studied real estate laws. When an attorney leaves school and takes the bar exam, which is a pre licensing exam, having a general knowledge of the law is not sufficient, because each state has different laws and different ways of doing legal business, the attorney has to be prepared for that states bar exam.
There are quite a bit of politics involved in a law career. Most attorneys do not start their own practice but work for an established practice initially. They may take these positions with the hopes of becoming a partner someday. Partnership is almost never guaranteed and requires hard work and forging strong relationships with the existing partners. Politics also comes into play in the court room and attorney that is well liked by the other members of the court can easily make deals that are beneficial to the client. This politicking ability carries over into the community as well. Lawyers have always been thought of as more able than the average person because of the amount of education they have. There is an expected sense of moral obligation to justice, sometimes it exists sometimes the reality the lawyer goes into the field not to seek out justice but to make money.
Whether it is real estate, medicine or just plan business, attorneys effect laws by trying laws and winning the cases. This practice of case law is what the justice system is built on. Not so much the laws on the books but how those laws are interpreted through trial in a court room.
Lawyers are way beyond filing simple legal forms. They shape the way the law is handled both inside and outside the courtroom.
